How to have a Servant’s Heart

What does it mean to have a servant’s heart?

It means serving other people’s needs before yours with a good heart. Now, I am not saying to be a slave, but I believe serving others these days is not valued because our hearts are not in it. We have become selfish people.

In this modern world we text, keep up with our family and friends on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger but when do we get the opportunity to serve them?

Technology is awesome but can be a distraction from doing what God wants and that is to serve. Serving is part of our purpose and is often overlooked.

Galatians 5:13 NLT – For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.

Moving from Selfishness

We need to stop being selfish and start being self-less by serving each other in love. What we forget is that serving is not just about the people we are serving but it’s about honoring God.

Ephesians 6:7 ESV – Rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man.

One way I believe we can start is in our own homes. What can we do to serve our husbands and our children? When we start by serving them we are teaching and showing the real love of Christ.

4 Keys to Developing a Servant’s Heart

Are you ready to have a servant’s heart? Here are 4 ways that can help us.

1. 1. 1. Look to Jesus.  Mark 10:45 ESV – For even the son of man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
      2. Think less of yourself.  John 13:17 ESV – Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
      3. Keep focused on what’s important.  Romans 14:17-18 MSG – God’s kingdom isn’t a matter of what you put in your stomach, for goodness sake. It’s what God does with your life as he sets it right, puts it together and completes it with joy. Your task is to single-mindedly serve Christ.
      4. Do your best.  Colossians 3:22-25 MSG – Servants, do what you’re told by your earthly masters. And don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the heart for your real Master, for God, confident that you’ll get paid in full when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind always that the ultimate Master you’re serving is Christ. The sullen servant who does shoddy work will be held responsible. Being a follower of Jesus doesn’t cover up bad work.

Let’s Pray

Lord Jesus, we thank you for coming to this world to serve us. Help us to look to you as an example. We want to have your servant’s heart to show others your real love. Remind us not to be selfish but to be selfless. Keep our eyes focused on what is important while always doing our best.
